Are you eligible for the Business Basics Grants Program?
The Queensland Government has recently announced a new grants program which is designed to provide support to businesses to increase core skills and adopt best practice. This support includes funding for a range of activities including:
- Website build or upgrade (including website refresh)
- Adding e-commerce
- Developing new website content
If you are eligible and your proposal is accepted, you will receive a single grant payment of $5,000 towards the cost of your project.
Eligibility Criteria
In order to be eligible for this grant, you must be able to answer Yes to all of the following questions:
- Does your business have fewer than 20 employees (by headcount) at the time of applying for the grant?
- Is your business registered for GST?
- Does your business have an active Australian Business Number (ABN)?
- Does your business have Queensland headquarters?
- Can you confirm that no owner(s) or director(s) of this business are insolvent or an undischarged bankrupt?
- Will your business have an expected turnover of $300,000 or less for the current financial year (2020-21)?

Application Process
The full details of the application process can be found on the grant landing page, however at a high level, this is what you need to do:
- Check your eligibility
- Think through your proposal and what you would spend the money on, if successful
- Read the key grant documents, paying particular attention to:
- Speak to us regarding your proposal so that we can provide you with a quote that you can use in your application
- Organise your statutory declaration now (prior to the grant opening). This involves:
- Downloading the statutory declaration document example
- Filling it in
- Getting it witnessed via an authorised person (see information below)
- Once the grant opens, use all of the information you have collected to complete the application form on or soon after Monday 31 May.
Common Questions
The money offered by the Queensland Government is a “grant” not a “loan”. This means that as long as you adhere to the guidelines of the grant, you will not need to pay the money back at a later date
You need to spend at least $5000 on your project in order to be eligible for the grant. If you spend less than $5000, you will become ineligible to receive the grant money
Applications open on Monday 31 May 2021. Although the assessment of applications will be undertaken utilising some kind of competitive criteria, based on previous grants of this nature, they tend to become over-subscribed (ie have too many people applying) very quickly. As such, we would strongly advise our customers to prepare their proposal information now so that they are in a position to submit their quote on 31 May 2021.

Note that during the COVID pandemic, in addition to the usual list of authorised people, the Government has also authorised additional people as outlined at this link. This includes chiropractors, dentists, financial advisers, medical practitioners amongst many other professions.
The Government has not yet released a detailed set of assessment criteria that they will use to measure each proposal. That being said, what we do know is that proposals will be competitively assessed and that the Government will only review “sufficient” applications to allow for a competitive assessment to occur. In practical terms, this means two things:
- You need to take some time when you prepare your proposal to think through your idea and clearly articulate its benefits to your business
- You need to submit the grant on or soon after 31 May 2021 – otherwise you run the risk of your proposal being ignored due to the number of businesses who got in ahead of you
